60. Super Over in T20

Yesterday those who watched IPL may have seen the thriller match between Rajasthan Royals and the  Kolkata Knight Riders.

KKR were on their way to win the match with Sourav Ganguly at the crease but the rookie pacer from Azamgarh ,Kamran Khan, got rid of Dada in the final over. With 2 runs required of the last ball Ishant Sharma hit the ball towards the cover region but a brilliant stop from Shane Warne restricted to just 1 . The match was tied.

So the super over concept came into being here. So what exactly is it?

Super Over Rule

  • After a Tied T20 match, each team selects 3 batsman and a bowler and play one over each.. number of runs scored and wickets lost calculate to who won.
  • If number of runs scored and wickets lost in one off super over are equal, total number of sixes hit in the match by each team decides who won.
  • If still equal, number of fours hit decides the winner.

KKR came into bat first and the three batsmen selected were Chris Gayle, Brendon Mcullum and Sourav Ganguly.
From Rajasthan Royals side Kamran Khan was given the oppurtunity and responsibility of bowling the super over.
